Frequently Asked Questions about Traveling to Edinburgh

Questions You Might Need to Know About Traveling to Edinburgh

For historic charm, The St. James Hotel & Spa is a top choice, located just steps from the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. This Georgian-style hotel blends original 18th-century architecture with modern luxury, offering rooms with views of the castle’s battlements. Its signature feature is the "Historic Evening Walk"—a guided tour through cobbled alleys where guests hear tales of Scotland’s past, including legends tied to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter inspiration.

Another gem is The Albyn Hotel, nestled in the UNESCO-listed New Town, known for its symmetrical streets and classical facades. The hotel showcases authentic Scottish craftsmanship in its interiors, featuring handwoven tartan rugs and antique oak furniture. Guests enjoy complimentary access to the Edinburgh Library and private tea ceremonies that reflect traditional Scottish hospitality, making it ideal for travelers seeking both elegance and heritage.

The best area for hotel stays in Edinburgh is the Old Town, particularly along the Royal Mile. This historic district is home to iconic landmarks like Edinburgh Castle, St. Giles Cathedral, and the Scottish Parliament, all within walking distance. Staying here allows easy access to major events such as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the nightly Castle Illuminations.

For a quieter, more refined experience, consider the New Town, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its elegant Georgian architecture and tree-lined avenues, this area hosts upscale hotels like The Queen’s Hotel, which offers a tranquil retreat while remaining close to shops, galleries, and restaurants. Whether you prefer vibrant atmosphere or serene sophistication, both districts provide exceptional base points for exploring the city’s rich cultural tapestry.

To enjoy a panoramic view of Edinburgh Castle, stay at The Westin Edinburgh Castle Hotel, the only five-star hotel built directly beneath the castle’s hillside. Many of its rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the fortress, especially stunning at sunrise or during the evening light show.

Alternatively, Edinburgh City Apartments on Calton Hill offer high-floor accommodations with sweeping vistas of the castle, the National Monument, and the city skyline. Located just above the Napoleon’s Observatory, these apartments provide an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts and history lovers alike. Both options ensure you wake up to the majestic silhouette of the castle—a defining symbol of Scotland’s enduring spirit.

Edinburgh offers immersive Scottish experiences beyond the usual tourist trail. Attend a live Highland Dance performance at the Edinburgh Castle Theatre or McDonald’s Tavern, where dancers wear authentic kilts and perform traditional reels.

Sip authentic Scotch whisky at the Whisky Academy, where guided tastings reveal distillation secrets and rare limited editions. Try your hand at wearing a kilt—many hotels, including The Albyn Hotel, offer rental services paired with professional photo shoots, letting you become a Highland legend.

Don’t miss the Edinburgh Festival Market, held every Saturday, where you can sample haggis, cullen skink, and Scottish black beer while browsing local crafts. These experiences bring Scotland’s vibrant culture vividly to life, transforming your visit into a memorable cultural journey.

Top hotels in Edinburgh boast premium amenities tailored to discerning travelers. The Albyn Hotel features a private butler service, bespoke itineraries, and a rooftop Scottish Tea Room serving farm-fresh dairy and homemade scones. Its guest rooms include handcrafted wool carpets and original fireplace designs.

The Westin Edinburgh Castle Hotel houses the city’s only Castle View Spa, using mineral-rich Scottish mountain waters and natural essential oils in treatments inspired by ancient Celtic rituals. The spa also offers private wellness suites and access to exclusive nighttime castle tours.

Both properties provide VIP concierge services, including advance bookings for Edinburgh International Festival performances and private transportation. These luxuries elevate the stay into a truly personalized and unforgettable experience.

Family-friendly hotels in Edinburgh include Holiday Inn Edinburgh Castle, located near the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Zoo. It offers spacious family rooms, a kids’ playroom, free children’s meals, and babysitting services, allowing parents to explore freely.

Another excellent option is Marriott Edinburgh, which features family suites with slide beds and themed activities like Celtic story workshops and tartan weaving classes. The hotel has a secure courtyard for children to play safely, and all rooms come with baby monitors and stroller rentals.

Both hotels provide multilingual guides, child-sized audio tours, and special maps for family adventures. They’re perfect for families seeking comfort, safety, and engaging cultural experiences in one of Scotland’s most historic cities.

Edinburgh hotels deeply integrate local culture into their design and guest experiences. The St. James Hotel & Spa displays replicas of poet Robert Burns’ manuscripts in its lobby and plays Gaelic folk music nightly. Its restaurant, Loch Bar, serves a "Literary Dinner" menu inspired by classic Scottish novels, complete with storytelling elements.

The Albyn Hotel collaborates with local artists to showcase Scottish landscape paintings throughout the corridors and hosts monthly weaving workshops where guests learn traditional wool techniques. The hotel also provides a curated map of hidden alleyway legends and historical inscriptions, encouraging guests to explore the city’s secret stories.

These thoughtful touches transform each stay into a living museum of Scottish heritage, blending art, history, and hospitality in meaningful ways.

Winter stays in Edinburgh are magical, especially during the Edinburgh Castle Light Show (December). The Westin Edinburgh Castle Hotel offers a "Winter Castle Glow Package," including a heated fireplace suite, hot chocolate welcome, and exclusive access to the light show.

The hotel’s lobby transforms into a Scottish Winter Village, complete with costumed snowmen and live bagpipe music. Meanwhile, The Albyn Hotel provides a "Winter Hot Tub Night"—where guests soak in an outdoor tub under the stars, gazing at snow-dusted Calton Hill and the castle. Some rooms even feature fireplace projection screens showing classic Scottish winter tales.

These seasonal experiences turn cold weather into a romantic, cinematic escape—perfect for capturing the soul of Scotland in winter.

Yes, many top hotels in Edinburgh provide multilingual tour guides. The Albyn Hotel and The St. James Hotel & Spa offer multilingual audio guide devices in Chinese, English, Spanish, French, German, and Japanese, covering key sites like Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile, and Scottish Parliament.

Some hotels also arrange private guided tours in Gaelic or themed historical lectures. For instance, The Westin Edinburgh Castle Hotel runs a "Secrets of the Castle" tour led by former historians, revealing underground tunnels and royal intrigues.

All front desks have bilingual staff fluent in English and additional languages, ready to assist with HopeGoo tickets for the Edinburgh International Festival or Scottish Dance Festival, ensuring seamless travel across language barriers.

Must-try breakfasts in Edinburgh hotels blend tradition and innovation. At The Albyn Hotel, the Scottish Breakfast Trio features haggis, smoked salmon, and hand-cut bacon, served with rye bread and local honey—all sourced from nearby farms. Their Scottish Tea Room also offers fresh seafood platters and artisanal jam.

The St. James Hotel & Spa presents a Literary Breakfast, where dishes are arranged like pages from classics such as Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, accompanied by handwritten author quotes. Some suites include butler-delivered breakfasts on private balconies, with views of the Edinburgh Castle sunrise.

InterContinental Edinburgh The George

Honestly, just one word: amazing! From the moment I walked in, everything about this hotel exceeded my expectations. The breakfast was outstanding—plenty of variety and delicious quality, with staff who were friendly and attentive without being overbearing. I stayed in room 44, a unique loft-style layout that felt quirky and cool—definitely not your average hotel room. Despite being split-level, it was incredibly quiet, making for a peaceful night’s sleep. I loved the bathroom amenities—they used my favorite brand, Baudruche, and the scent alone made me feel pampered. Granted, the room size isn’t huge compared to some mainland hotels, but considering I was staying in a beautifully preserved historic building right in the heart of Edinburgh, it felt like a real privilege. The location is fantastic—walkable to major sights and super convenient for public transit. Everything about this stay screamed quality and charm. If I ever come back to Edinburgh, this will be my first choice again. A truly unforgettable experience.

The staff’s attention to detail, combined with the charming atmosphere of the hotel, made this place feel like home. The Caledonian Edinburgh, Curio Collection by Hilton

Staying at The Caledonian Edinburgh was an absolute highlight of our trip. Located right at the intersection of Princes Street and Lothian Street, it sits perfectly between Old Town and New Town—just a short walk from the iconic Edinburgh Castle, with views of the fortress from the front door. The hotel itself is a historic building with rich heritage, once visited by legends like Arthur Conan Doyle, which made it extra special for us as devoted Sherlock Holmes fans. The breakfast was a classic English spread, but what stood out most was the waffle served with honey straight from a whole, fresh honeycomb—such a unique and memorable touch. There’s also a beautiful garden restaurant in the atrium, though we were pressed for time and didn’t get to experience it. Still, the atmosphere alone adds so much charm. From the location to the details, every element felt thoughtfully curated. A truly exceptional stay that exceeded expectations.

Prestonfield House

Staying at Prestonfield House felt like stepping into a classic British country estate—seriously elegant and full of charm. The property is nestled in a private grounds, giving it a peaceful, secluded vibe that’s perfect for couples looking for a romantic getaway. While the location is a bit off the beaten path, it's easily accessible by train or car, and the surrounding countryside adds to the overall experience. The architecture and interiors are incredibly photogenic—every corner looks like a scene from a period drama. The only minor downside is some noticeable sound transfer between floors, so quiet moments might be interrupted occasionally. But honestly, the ambiance, privacy, and unique character more than make up for it. A truly memorable stay with high value for money.

The Balmoral Hotel

Staying at The Balmoral Hotel was an absolutely unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, the location was perfect—just a five-minute walk to Calton Hill, and everything else in the Old Town, Rainbow Street, and Royal Mile was within easy reach. The hotel itself feels like a living piece of history, with elegant architecture and timeless charm. I couldn’t help but stop by room 552—the door painted a striking purple, which added such a unique touch. It’s said that J.K. Rowling found inspiration here while writing the final book in the Harry Potter series, and it’s easy to imagine why. The views from the windows are breathtaking, and the staff went above and beyond to make us feel at home. If you’re looking for a blend of luxury, history, and convenience in Edinburgh, this is the place to be. Highly recommended.

Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa

My stay at the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa in Edinburgh was absolutely outstanding. I booked a Club Level room with a view of Edinburgh Castle—waking up to that iconic skyline was breathtaking, especially during sunrise. The hotel has a side entrance just steps away from the castle gates, making access incredibly convenient. Whether you're heading to Princes Street, Calton Hill, or exploring the Old Town, everything is within easy walking distance—no need for taxis or buses. The service truly stood out. Staff were genuinely warm and attentive, going above and beyond to make me feel welcome. In all my travels across Europe, this is hands down the best hospitality experience I've had at a hotel. As a Club Level guest, I had access to the exclusive lounge, where breakfast and evening canapés were served—both well-prepared and satisfying. Coffee was available throughout the day, perfect for early risers or late-night relaxations. The spa facilities are impressive too; while some premium treatments require an extra fee, the sauna, steam rooms, and wellness areas are thoughtfully designed and create a peaceful retreat. The room itself was comfortable and clean, with a spacious bathroom. It’s not the largest room, but it’s well-proportioned and functional. One minor downside? No balcony—but honestly, that didn’t detract from the overall experience. The fitness centre is large and well-equipped, with a good selection of machines and a lovely pool area. Just wish the closing time could be extended a little later into the evening. Overall, this hotel delivers on every front—location, views, service, amenities, and atmosphere. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Edinburgh. I’ll definitely come back here next time.
