Questions You Might Need to Know About Traveling to Yoshida
Located in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture, Yoshida Town is a quiet Edo-period town renowned for its traditional crafts and views of Mount Fuji. It preserves unique historical districts and artisanal culture, offering authentic experiences through century-old shops, samurai residences, and tea plantations that define its rural charm.
Start at Yoshida Town Historic Streets, where Edo-era wooden buildings retain the post-town atmosphere. The Old Tokaido Pine Avenue provides spectacular Mount Fuji views, especially during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. Join washi paper workshops or tea ceremonies, then ride the vintage trains of Oigawa Railway. Nearby Sumatakyo Onsen offers secluded hot spring baths in mountain valleys.
Don't miss sakura shrimp dishes, a local specialty where tiny shrimp are steamed with rice. Shizuoka oden simmered in bonito broth features daikon and fish cakes. Try Anagawa mochi, 400-year-old rice cakes coated with soybean flour. Morning markets sell Fuji-shaped manju stuffed with local tea leaves.
From Shizuoka Station, take JR Tokaido Line to Fujieda Station (25min), then transfer to Oigawa Railway for Yoshida Station (30min). Explore on foot or rental bicycles as attractions cluster within 1km of the station. Buses to Sumatakyo run infrequently (50min ride) – check schedules beforehand. Taxis are scarce; ask your inn to arrange one. Narrow mountain roads require cautious driving.
Mid-April to early May combines cherry blossoms with tea harvest, while November offers fiery foliage against clear Fuji views. Humid summers (Jun-Aug) bring rain; winters may see mountain snow but fewer tourists. Avoid Golden Week (early May) and Obon (mid-Aug) crowds.
Japanese predominates; stations have basic English signs. Good mobile coverage with foreigner SIMs at 7-11. Cash is king – only major hotels accept cards. For emergencies, Fujieda City Hospital is 30 minutes away (look for "やくど" pharmacy signs). Power is 100V with Type A outlets. Tap water is safe but bottled water recommended near onsens. The post office near the station opens Saturday mornings.
