I stayed at Secret Garden Backpackers for a total of 2.5 months, rotating through three different rooms—each experience was consistently positive. Even during intense heatwaves without air conditioning, the temperature remained comfortable—never too hot or too cold. Common areas were spotless, with staff cleaning multiple times a day. You’d always see them sweeping, mopping, or wiping down surfaces, which made the hostel feel incredibly hygienic and well-maintained. The highlight? The Secret Garden. It’s not just a garden—it’s a sanctuary. Whether I was having breakfast, reading a book, or just relaxing, this peaceful outdoor space made hostel living enjoyable and bearable. The kitchen is fully equipped with free tea and coffee, microwaves, toasters, and more. The only downside? A few stoves didn’t work, but that’s a minor issue considering how well the rest of the kitchen is kept. Showers have been upgraded recently—new ones with strong water pressure—so I highly recommend using the ones near the staircases instead of those by the garden. They’re clean, fresh, and satisfying. Staff are friendly, professional, and always willing to help with local tips or activity suggestions. What really stood out compared to other hostels? The clear expectations around hygiene and cleanliness. They don’t hesitate to kindly remind guests to tidy up their space—always in a respectful, non-confrontational way. That kind of accountability makes a huge difference. This hostel isn’t just good—it’s one of the best I’ve ever stayed at across many cities. Highly recommended.

The stay was excellent overall—great location, just a short walk to public transit and surrounded by great dining options. The only downside was when I returned from an outing, I found my room had been changed without my consent. Apparently, a tour group staff member rearranged my booking behind the scenes, which felt intrusive and frustrating. Communication could definitely be improved—guests should always be consulted before any changes are made. Despite this hiccup, the property is well-maintained, welcoming, and offers fantastic value for money. Would definitely recommend it to travelers looking for a comfortable, central base in Surry Hills.

The rooms are priced affordably, and while they’re above a bustling local pub—so some evening noise is expected—I didn’t mind at all. In fact, I was out exploring: catching views of the Opera House, watching fruit bats fly at dusk, and returning late to grab a quick bite or drink before bed. Just be aware that this 150-year-old building means narrow stairs and a bit of climb to get to your room. But hey, if you're up for it, the evenings are great for hanging out with regulars who gather at the hotel bar, swapping stories and enjoying the atmosphere. And if you come back late? Your key grants access through the side door even when the front is closed. Overall, I couldn’t have been happier with my choice. If I ever return to Sydney under similar circumstances—traveling alone, on a budget, wanting authenticity—I’d definitely stay here again.

Located just steps from Central Station, this hotel offers unbeatable convenience for exploring Sydney. Right across the street is BigBus with red and blue routes that cover most major attractions—grab a 48-hour pass and you can visit so many iconic spots in just two days. The hotel itself is clean, well-maintained, and very comfortable. One small note: the central air conditioning runs quite cold, so bringing a light blanket is a good idea. Overall, it’s a fantastic value for the location and quality—highly recommend for travelers who want to make the most of their time in Sydney.

Sydney Park Hotel
Stayed at Sydney Park Hotel for two weekend visits in March 2024 while traveling to friends in the Blue Mountains, recommended by some locals who used to live in Sydney. Check-in was smooth and welcoming—staff seemed to know exactly why we were there (maybe it was the big suitcases?). We booked a King room for extra space, and loved the generous closet area and room for luggage. Over two stays, we were assigned different but similarly sized rooms—Room 3, a corner unit facing King Street/Logan Lane, and Room 4, which overlooked St Peters train station. Room 3 had great cross breezes when all three windows were open, though it did face a busy intersection with more street noise. Room 4 was just as spacious and slightly quieter, with a view of the train line. Both rooms offered a real sense of being in the heart of the city—traffic hum and train rumble clearly audible when windows were open. Thankfully, earplugs were provided in both rooms, which helped us sleep well despite the urban buzz. If you're very noise-sensitive, another hotel might be better suited. But for us, it wasn’t an issue. Transport couldn’t be easier—St Peters Station is literally across Lord Street, just a few meters from the entrance. For two people coming from SYD Airport, an Uber ($22 total) was actually cheaper than taking the train ($19 each). And bonus: direct bookings come with a nice discount, which is common now with independently operated hotels worldwide. Definitely worth contacting them directly via email or phone to beat any online rate. Overall, a solid choice for convenience, comfort, and value.

Staying one night was definitely okay, and the location made it a great choice—just a short metro ride into the city center, with plenty of restaurants and convenience stores nearby. The room was small but clean and well-maintained, with all the essentials you'd expect for a budget-friendly stay. It's perfect if you're looking to explore Sydney without spending much. That said, I was surprised they only allow one-night stays and don’t accept guests outside the 18–40 age range. While I understand it’s aimed at younger travelers, this restriction felt a bit strict, especially for older solo travelers or families. Still, if you’re in your late teens to early forties and want a no-frills, social vibe with good access to the city, this place is worth checking out.

The location is unbeatable—just steps away from Mascot Station and multiple bus stops, making it super easy to explore Sydney or head to the airport.
