Everything you need to know about Chaotiangong Square

Jinling Hotel is highly recommended for its panoramic views of Chao Tian Palace's ancient architecture and the Qinhuai River scenery. Located just a 5-minute walk from the square, this five-star hotel blends traditional Chinese design with modern comfort. Many rooms offer unobstructed views of the historic temple complex, especially during sunrise.

Another excellent choice is Nanjing International Conference Center Hotel, situated directly west of the square. It provides convenient access to Line 1 of the Nanjing Metro, reaching key attractions like Confucius Temple and Xuanwu Lake in under 15 minutes. The hotel features a traditional tea house and an intangible cultural heritage exhibition area, allowing guests to immerse themselves in Nanjing’s centuries-old heritage while enjoying premium amenities.

Visitors can experience Ming Dynasty Taoist ritual performances held annually during Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival at the main hall, showcasing Nanjing’s historical significance as a center of ancient rites. Nearby, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Market offers hands-on workshops in paper cutting, embroidery, and Yunjin brocade weaving, where travelers can create authentic souvenirs.

Don’t miss the evening Qinhuai River cruise with lantern festival tour, departing daily at 7:30 PM. Glide past illuminated Ming-era bridges and pavilions while listening to guided storytelling about the "Six Dynasties Capital" legends. The 90-minute journey includes multilingual narration and is perfect for immersive cultural exploration.

Take Metro Line 1 (towards Baguazhou) from Nanjing South Railway Station—just 4 stops to San Shan Jie Station. Exit and walk 8 minutes to reach Chao Tian Palace Square. The journey takes about 25 minutes and costs only 8 RMB.

For a direct option, take a taxi—approximately 15 km, taking 25–35 minutes depending on traffic, costing around 45–60 RMB. The station also features a Tourist Service Center offering free maps, guides, and pre-booked shuttle services, ideal for families or travelers with heavy luggage seeking a seamless transfer experience.

Must-try specialties include Salted Duck and Nanjing Roast Duck. The former, a classic Nanjing dish, is slow-cooked with soy sauce and spices, yielding tender, aromatic meat. The latter adapts Beijing-style roasting techniques using local ducks, resulting in crisp skin and juicy flesh—best enjoyed with thin pancakes and sweet bean sauce.

Recommended restaurants: Lü Liu Ju and Lian Hu Restaurant, both within a 5-minute walk south of the square. They serve authentic Jiangsu cuisine in Qing Dynasty-style settings. Lü Liu Ju’s Eight Treasures Duck, recognized as a provincial intangible cultural heritage dish, is especially popular—reservations are advised to avoid peak hours.

Absolutely! The area offers numerous family-friendly facilities, including a children’s interactive museum, outdoor theater, and themed sculpture garden open daily from 10 AM to 4 PM. The spacious central plaza is ideal for kids to play safely, with nearby restrooms, baby care rooms, and drinking fountains.

Hotels like Jinling Hotel provide family packages featuring art workshops, traditional costume photo sessions, and history talks tailored for young visitors. Parents can enjoy quiet moments while children engage in cultural activities. Weekends often host "Grandparent-Child Yunjin Brocade Crafting" events, strengthening intergenerational bonds—making it one of Nanjing’s top destinations for family travel.

The square is open 24/7 with no entry fee. The main hall is open from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, last admission at 4:30 PM. Closed on Mondays (except public holidays).

Admission to the main hall costs 30 RMB for adults, half-price for students with valid ID, and free for seniors aged 60+ and children under 1.2 meters. Payment options include WeChat Pay and Alipay, and tickets can be booked via the official app. The site features wheelchair-accessible ramps and electric wheelchair rentals, ensuring full accessibility. For the best experience, visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat.

Stay at Nanjing Jinling Hotel, just a 5-minute walk from Chao Tian Palace, where traditional Chinese architecture meets modern luxury. Rooms feature river-view terraces overlooking the Yangtze River and the palace’s ancient rooftops. The rooftop restaurant, "Cloud Pavilion," serves authentic Huaiyang cuisine with 270-degree panoramic views, offering a perfect blend of history and contemporary elegance. Complimentary shuttle service to the metro ensures seamless travel to other landmarks like Xuanwu Lake or Zhongshan Mausoleum.

From Chao Tian Palace Square, a 10-minute walk leads directly to Confucius Temple and Qinhuai River Scenic Area, passing through Zhan Garden and the historic Lao Men Dong District—ideal for sampling local delicacies like salted duck and steamed buns. For destinations like Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum or Xuanwu Lake, take Line 1 of the Nanjing Metro from the nearby Chao Tian Palace Station, reaching them in about 20 minutes with no transfers. Additionally, shared e-bike docking stations outside the square offer eco-friendly options for exploring the ancient city walls and cherry blossom trails.

Don’t miss the Ming Dynasty Court Ritual Performance held every weekend on the central stage at Chao Tian Palace Square, reenacting solemn imperial ceremonies with authentic costumes and music. Nearby, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall offers hands-on workshops in paper-cutting, embroidery, and clay sculpture led by master artisans. In the evening, stroll along the lantern-lit promenade beside the Qinhuai River to experience the poetic charm of "Ten Miles of Qinhuai," immersing yourself in centuries of literary heritage.

Absolutely! Nanjing China Marriott Hotel is located just south of the square and features spacious family rooms, including connecting suites and dedicated kids’ activity zones with interactive projection games and mini libraries. The hotel boasts an indoor heated pool and a family relaxation lounge. Guided tours are offered free of charge, covering the Chao Tian Palace Museum, Confucius Temple bookshops, and traditional tea ceremonies—making it a perfect choice for educational and fun-filled family getaways in Nanjing.

Yes! The Stone Lion Plaza in front of Chao Tian Palace is a must-visit photo spot—two imposing Ming Dynasty stone lions flank the red-brick courtyard, creating a symmetrical backdrop against golden rooftops. The Glazed Pagoda to the west shines brilliantly at sunset, its golden tiles reflecting in the still water below, resembling a classical ink painting. To the north, the Ancient Tree Corridor is lined with red lanterns, glowing warmly at night—perfect for Hanfu photoshoots or wedding portraits, where every step feels like stepping into a historical drama.

Yes, both Jinling Hotel and China Marriott Hotel provide multilingual staff fluent in Mandarin, English, Japanese, and Korean. Front desk agents assist with flight bookings, metro tickets, and attraction reservations. Some rooms include smart translation devices for real-time conversation support. Guests can also rent voice-guided audio maps, ensuring smooth navigation whether asking for directions or interpreting museum exhibits—offering a seamless experience for international travelers.

Floral Hotel·the old gate East of Nanjing Confucius Temple hotel

Staying at Flora Hotel in the Old Gate East of Nanjing Confucius Temple was an absolute delight. The location is perfect—just a short turn off the main street and you're right in the heart of the old alleyways, where you can easily find amazing local eats like the famous crispy pork ribs. The host was incredibly warm and welcoming; they escorted us straight to our room after check-in, helped carry our bags, and even turned on the air conditioning before we even stepped inside. There’s a cute, chubby Corgi who lives here—so affectionate and playful, it’s hard not to fall in love with him. Breakfast was thoughtfully prepared too—each guest received a generous portion of congee, eggs, and a variety of traditional snacks. If you’re still hungry, more is always available. Everything about this stay felt personal, cozy, and authentic. It’s clear that attention to detail and genuine hospitality are at the core of this charming little gem. I’ll definitely be back.

Floral Hotel·Xitang hotel (Nanjing Confucius Temple Laomendong Branch)

Staying at Floral Hotel·Xitang in Nanjing's Confucius Temple and Laomendong area was a fantastic experience, mainly thanks to the unbeatable location. From the airport, I took the subway S1 to Nanjing South Station, transferred to Line 3, and got off at Confucius Temple Station Exit 2—just a short walk from the hotel. The entire journey took about an hour and cost only ¥8, making it super affordable and convenient. Right downstairs is the famous and budget-friendly Nanjing Street Food Stall, and across the street is a popular photo spot perfect for Instagram-worthy shots. The Qinhuai River boat dock is literally a 5-minute walk away, and other attractions are easily accessible via metro. The only minor downside? Staff didn’t seem very talkative—no greeting when checking in or out, which felt a bit cold compared to what you’d expect from higher-end hotels. But honestly, it’s probably just a generational thing; young people these days tend to be quieter. Still, a simple 'hello' or smile would go a long way. Overall, I stayed four nights and loved the cozy vibe, clean rooms, and prime location. Highly recommend this place for travelers who value convenience and charm.
