You can also reach famous spots like Lombard Street and the waterfront with just one cable car ride—definitely worth it! I highly recommend getting a day pass for $14; it’s affordable and gives you unlimited rides throughout the day. The room was clean, comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Overall, this hotel offers great value and unbeatable location—perfect for exploring San Francisco without hassle.

The staff went above and beyond to make our visit special, offering helpful tips and warm hospitality. We were able to easily explore downtown SF and nearby attractions, all within walking distance. From start to finish, it was an unforgettable experience. I’d absolutely stay here again—highly recommend for anyone looking for a stylish, authentic stay in the heart of the city.
The Willows Inn
The Willows Inn is one of the few clean, well-maintained, and reasonably priced options in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood. The staff are consistently friendly and accommodating, always ready to help with anything you might need. While the bathroom and shower facilities are shared and located in the hallway—something we usually prefer to avoid—the setup works surprisingly well. We’ve never had to wait for access, and the cleanliness is excellent. The included breakfast is generous and satisfying. Having stayed here multiple times over the years, we genuinely appreciate the value and charm this place offers. If you’re looking for a comfortable, authentic stay in the heart of Castro, The Willows Inn is absolutely worth considering.
HI San Francisco Downtown Hostel
At 66, this was my first time staying at a hostel—and I’m amazed by how welcoming everyone was and how clean and comfortable the rooms are. We booked an en-suite room with crisp white towels, fresh bedding on a wonderfully comfy bed, and daily housekeeping made sure everything stayed spotless. Located just around the corner from Union Square, it’s perfectly positioned for exploring downtown San Francisco—walking distance to shops, restaurants, and all major transit options. The location is unbeatable, and the value for money is outstanding. Huge thanks to the friendly staff at check-in—they made our arrival smooth and stress-free.
Mayflower Hotel
We stayed at the Mayflower Hotel for five nights at the end of our California road trip, and it was absolutely perfect. The hotel offers a free private parking garage—a real lifesaver in San Francisco—but be aware that the entrance is quite narrow. We managed to get our Toyota RAV4 in thanks to my husband’s sharp eyesight! Housed in a beautifully preserved historic building, the lobby has an elegant, timeless charm. Our room on the 6th floor (room 604) faced the main street—while the bed was a bit smaller than expected, the room itself was spacious with an enormous walk-in closet. The bathroom could use some modernization, but everything was clean and well-equipped, and fresh linens were delivered daily—though we did notice the sheets weren’t changed during our five-night stay, which was a small concern. Staff were warm and welcoming, and the two vintage elevators added such a unique character to the experience. Breakfast was included and offered a lovely continental spread: toasted bread, deli ham, cheese slices, jam, muffins, fresh orange juice, and coffee—the ideal way to start the day. The location couldn’t be better for exploring the city using public transit. Highly recommended! Just one tip: if you plan to drive, rent a compact car—it’ll make parking much easier.

Even though there are some people experiencing homelessness in the area, they didn’t seem threatening or intrusive—we felt safe throughout our stay. Overall, this place offers great value, comfort, and location, making it an excellent choice for travelers who want to explore San Francisco like a local.
