From the moment we arrived at Ten 2nd Avenue, we felt genuinely embraced. The hotel shuttle drivers were safe, friendly, and always ready with helpful tips. Every staff member we met was courteous, attentive, and thoughtful. They’d often call us on the hotel phone right when we realized we needed something—asking if we needed exactly that. Breakfast each morning was a delight, carefully prepared, and served with genuine care. The property itself was secure, spotless, cheerfully decorated, and beautifully landscaped. Our only regret? Not staying longer. We’re already planning our return visit!

The Maison Jacaranda is absolutely beautiful, with a stunning room and exceptional service. However, keep in mind there's no 24-hour front desk—access is secured via a gate code. We booked with breakfast included, but the so-called breakfast was just yogurt and fruit in the room fridge, plus coffee, tea, honey, and granola in the cabinet. Honestly, it wasn’t a real breakfast, which came as a surprise. The neighborhood is quiet and entirely residential—definitely not walkable at night. It’s dark, isolated, and empty after sunset, so relying on rideshare apps like Uber or Bolt is essential. I highly recommend Bolt: it’s fast, half the price of Uber, reliable, and the app works flawlessly. Getting to and from the property was never an issue using Bolt. Overall, if you’re okay with no actual breakfast and need to depend on rideshares for transport, this place offers great value and charm. Highly recommend with full awareness of these details.

I stayed at Central Lodge in the Houghton area of Johannesburg, which was recommended by the friendly manager of Monarchy Guest House where I initially booked. Though I can't find the listing on TripAdvisor anymore, here’s my honest take on the place. While Johannesburg isn’t typically considered a tourist hotspot—unlike Cape Town, which I visited next—I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable and secure my stay was. The property sits within a spacious, gated compound, tucked away in a quiet, low-key neighborhood that feels safe and peaceful. My room had several nice touches: a surprisingly spacious bed, a flat-screen TV with decent channels, and a clean, private bathroom. No meals are served on-site, but just a short walk around back leads to Burger King and a Sasol gas station with a solid selection of breakfast options in the morning. For sightseeing, Constitution Hill—the city’s premier landmark—is just a 10- to 15-minute taxi ride away. This historic site once housed Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, and offers an impressive rampart for panoramic views of the city. Nearby is Park Station, the main transport hub, where I caught the Gautrain to Pretoria for a day trip and later boarded a bus bound for Cape Town. All in all, despite the city’s reputation, this location offered great convenience, comfort, and peace of mind. It’s definitely a smart choice if you’re visiting Johannesburg and want a quiet, well-connected base.
