Staying at Shengtang Business Hotel in Johannesburg's Chinatown was an absolute highlight of my trip. The location is unbeatable—right in the heart of the bustling Chinese community, just about 7.5 km from the airport. The hotel offers a convenient airport transfer service that made my arrival stress-free. Step outside and you're surrounded by authentic Chinese restaurants—Fisherman's Island, Shunde Restaurant, Wagan Family, Wangjiao Dining, Chongqing Hotpot, and Northeast Dumplings all within walking distance. Need groceries? The Wanfu Lai supermarket has everything from fresh produce to pantry staples, including a wide selection of teas. Everything I needed for daily life was just steps away. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, with excellent value for money. Safety, convenience, and authenticity—it’s rare to find all three in one place. If you’re visiting Johannesburg and want to feel at home while experiencing real Chinese culture, this hotel is a must-try.

I stayed at HomeBase Melville Hostel for over two weeks, and it quickly became my favourite spot in Johannesburg. The hostel is located within a secure compound, making it feel safe and welcoming—perfect for solo travelers or those looking to settle in for a while. The Wi-Fi is reliable, the hot showers work great, and having access to shared kitchens makes cooking your own meals easy and cost-effective. The staff are genuinely friendly and always ready to help—especially appreciated after I was mugged downtown. They went above and beyond to support me, which made a huge difference. The neighborhood itself is vibrant: 7th Street is packed with restaurants and bars, ideal for evening outings. Just a short walk away, you’ll find the Koppies Nature Reserve and Botanical Gardens—great spots for hiking, fresh air, and escaping city chaos. Supermarkets like Spar and Pick&Pay are conveniently close, so grocery runs are hassle-free. Getting into the city is simple too—public transport options include the Rea Vaya C4 and T3 bus lines, which are affordable and efficient. For more flexibility, Bolt and Uber taxis are reasonably priced outside peak hours. Overall, this hostel offers a fantastic balance of safety, comfort, convenience, and local charm. Highly recommended for anyone exploring Joburg on a budget.

Staying at Timebridge Mansion was a great experience for our trip to Johannesburg. The location was perfect—quiet yet close to everything we needed, and the room was cozy, clean, and well-maintained. We’d definitely stay here again if we ever return to this part of the city. One thing to note: the driveway is quite steep, so low-clearance vehicles should proceed with caution. With a bit of practice, it’s manageable, but worth mentioning for those driving a compact or lowered car. Overall, a fantastic stay with excellent value and a welcoming atmosphere.

Breakfast was fresh, delicious, and well-prepared, offering a perfect start to the day. Location is convenient, just minutes from public transit, making it easy to explore Johannesburg. Overall, this hotel delivers excellent value and comfort. I highly recommend it—will definitely be back!

I stayed at Central Lodge in the Houghton area of Johannesburg, which was recommended by the friendly manager of Monarchy Guest House where I initially booked. Though I can't find the listing on TripAdvisor anymore, here’s my honest take on the place. While Johannesburg isn’t typically considered a tourist hotspot—unlike Cape Town, which I visited next—I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable and secure my stay was. The property sits within a spacious, gated compound, tucked away in a quiet, low-key neighborhood that feels safe and peaceful. My room had several nice touches: a surprisingly spacious bed, a flat-screen TV with decent channels, and a clean, private bathroom. No meals are served on-site, but just a short walk around back leads to Burger King and a Sasol gas station with a solid selection of breakfast options in the morning. For sightseeing, Constitution Hill—the city’s premier landmark—is just a 10- to 15-minute taxi ride away. This historic site once housed Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, and offers an impressive rampart for panoramic views of the city. Nearby is Park Station, the main transport hub, where I caught the Gautrain to Pretoria for a day trip and later boarded a bus bound for Cape Town. All in all, despite the city’s reputation, this location offered great convenience, comfort, and peace of mind. It’s definitely a smart choice if you’re visiting Johannesburg and want a quiet, well-connected base.
