Check-in was a bit stressful at first, but the on-duty manager handled everything with great empathy and professionalism. After a calm conversation, the issue was resolved smoothly—and they even surprised me with afternoon tea, evening entertainment, and a bottle of wine. The next day’s airport transfer was excellent too; driver Andy was friendly, courteous, and helped carry my luggage without being asked. We had a pleasant chat throughout the ride. A few suggestions for improvement: the afternoon tea selection was limited, and the fruit—especially the watermelon—wasn’t very fresh. Dinner options were also quite narrow. The room stayed chilly despite running the heater all night—temperature barely reached 15°C, so adding a heating option would be helpful. Also, breakfast was missing some items, and they weren’t replenished promptly. That said, the overall experience was still positive. The staff responded quickly to feedback, and the views from the room were stunning—especially sunrise in the morning. One small disappointment: no capsule or instant coffee available, which is common even in budget hotels. Adding that would make the stay much more convenient for guests who rely on coffee.

The hostess is a young woman from Northeast China—genuine, kind, and incredibly helpful. She’s lived here for ten years and knows all the best local eateries. Her recommendations were spot-on; I ended up visiting one of her favorite spots twice (and still can’t stop thinking about it!). The courtyard is perfect for hanging laundry, and there’s a cozy common area with both hot and cold water available—such thoughtful touches. The front garden is lush with greenery, clearly reflecting how much the family loves life and nature. Gulangyu isn’t big, but the alleys are endless—walking around is great, but plan your meals wisely. Many restaurants close by 9 PM, so don’t count on late-night takeout. Some places sell mineral water for as high as $4—ask around, you’ll find cheaper options. And yes, the inn provides drinking water too! It’s clear this place is run with love. If fate brings me back, I’ll be knocking on that door again.
