B&B Casa Ortega

Located just steps from the train station in Marseille, this charming B&B is a hidden gem. Despite the proximity to the station—which might worry some—this place exudes warmth and character. The rooms are quiet, cozy, and beautifully decorated with unique, thoughtfully curated details that give each space a personal touch. I’ve stayed at several 4-star hotels that didn’t come close to matching the quality and comfort here. The location is super convenient, especially if you’re arriving by rail or planning to explore the city. I highly recommend it—excellent value, great atmosphere, and a truly memorable stay.

Les Cabanons de Fonfon

Our stay at Les Cabanons de Fonfon was truly unforgettable. Nestled in a magical valley just outside Marseille, the setting feels like a hidden gem—serene, picturesque, and full of natural charm. The welcome was exceptional, with warm hospitality that made us feel right at home. The room (Terrasse) is cozy but could use a little refresh and a bit more attention to cleaning detail—nothing major, but something to note. That said, the bedding was comfortable, and the breakfast was generous and delicious, featuring high-quality local ingredients. Despite some evening activity from nearby bars and restaurants, the night remained peaceful. We woke up gently to the soft sounds of fishermen early in the morning—a perfect, authentic way to start the day. Overall, this place offers a unique, tranquil escape with great value. It’s definitely worth experiencing if you're looking for something quiet, beautiful, and off the beaten path.

Le Petit Panier

Let’s start with this: this isn’t a hotel, not an apartment, and definitely not a proper room—it’s essentially a converted garage. Finding the entrance was tricky, as everything was hidden and confusing. Once inside, after navigating what felt like a maze to get the key, we stepped into a tiny space immediately hit by a strong musty smell. We had four people booked for a 4-person room, but the layout was chaotic—right by the bed was a completely open shower stall with no privacy, followed by a toilet so small you couldn’t even turn around. The only furniture was a small non-reclining sofa, a kitchenette, and a wall-mounted bed—all crammed into one tight area. We sat down on the sofa, exhausted from travel and searching all day, when suddenly a large cockroach crawled out from under the cabinet straight toward us. Naturally, we filmed it immediately—we weren’t staying. We packed up our bags in under ten minutes and left. By then it was already dark, and with no response from the platform until the next morning, we had to scramble to find another place to stay. Most options were fully booked or didn’t accept cash (we didn’t have foreign cards). We managed to secure accommodation through friends while keeping in touch with customer support. The owner refused to refund our payment for two nights, claiming we’d already stayed and hadn’t contacted them directly. After days of back-and-forth emails, no refund came. I can’t recommend this property at all—photos are misleading, and the host is clearly dishonest. That said, the platform did help by crediting us back one night’s cost in points, which was a small relief.

Hôtel Restaurant le Printemps

I arrived late in Marseille and had no idea about the city, so I ended up booking this place without much research. The moment I walked in, I regretted it—extremely dirty, musty smell, and I even saw pests in the room. It was an awful experience from start to finish. The location is okay, close to the train station, but everything else falls short. The staff didn’t seem helpful, and the room looked like it hadn’t been cleaned properly in weeks. I felt sick just staying there—literally couldn’t stand it for more than one night. If you're visiting Marseille, avoid this hotel. There are far better options with better hygiene and service. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

Hotel Manon

I stayed at Hotel Manon from August 8 to 12, 2023—mostly because every other option was fully booked. My first night arrived around 8:30 PM, and the room was dim, outdated, and frankly not clean at all. The hallway had a strong, unpleasant smell. During the night, I went to the bathroom and opened the sink—immediately out crawled a cockroach. It was disgusting. The next morning, I cleaned the sink with wipes just to avoid touching it again. When I mentioned this to the hotel owner, he shrugged it off, saying guests were cooking in the rooms and he hadn’t had time to clean up. He promised a different room for the next night—which I did get. It had a bedside table and TV, but the cleanliness issue remained. Nothing happened the second night, but on the third, as I stepped into the bathroom before turning on the light, something brushed past my ankles. I called the manager, who claimed he saw nothing and told me to leave the light on all night to keep pests away. On the final morning, another cockroach appeared—this time crawling up the wall right above the bed. I left the hotel with immense relief. I will never stay here again, and I absolutely do not recommend it to anyone.

Alex Hotel & Spa

Staying at Alex Hotel & Spa in Marseille was a pleasant surprise—its proximity to the train station is incredible. Just a 200-meter walk from the station, it’s super convenient for getting around the city. The room is compact but well-organized; two large 28-inch suitcases fit, though space is tight when fully unpacked. Breakfast met European three-star standards—plenty of options, fresh pastries, and local touches. What really stood out was the small courtyard: peaceful, quiet, and perfect for morning coffee or a quiet moment. Plus, most major attractions are within a 20-minute walk or short transit ride. Great location, solid value, and a welcoming vibe. Definitely my top pick for future trips to Marseille.

Ibis Budget Marseille Vieux-Port

The Ibis Budget Marseille Vieux-Port is perfectly located—walking distance to the old port and all the main sights, making it super convenient for exploring the city. Breakfast was solid: fresh fruit, cold cuts, and a good selection of pastries. However, the room lacked bedside tables, which made it awkward to place personal items. The bathroom didn’t come with hand towels or a hairdryer—both had to be requested at reception and returned immediately. If you wanted to keep the dryer, you had to leave your ID as collateral, which felt a bit odd. Our bed was very noisy and stiff, and the pillows were overly soft with no shape, so they weren’t great for comfort. If you’re sensitive to noise or have trouble sleeping, avoid weekends—the building is right above bars and restaurants, and even with double-glazed windows, street sounds carried through clearly. Overall, the price-to-quality ratio is fair for a budget stay, but the rooms are definitely basic. It’s best suited for travelers looking for a simple, no-frills overnight option rather than a relaxing retreat.

And don’t miss the cocktails—they’re absolutely enchanting, with a unique flair that elevates the entire experience. This isn’t just a stay; it’s a memorable journey from start to finish.

Everything went smoothly during my stay—truly exceptional! The front desk staff, Sandra, Marwa, and Khedidja, were incredibly friendly, courteous, and professional throughout. The hotel’s location is excellent—just minutes from the Vélodrome and easily accessible via public transit, making it convenient for both business and leisure travelers.
