Birmingham Central Backpackers

This hostel completely exceeded my expectations—10 out of 10 is totally justified! The bed was incredibly comfortable, and I got a middle bunk that felt stable and secure. The room was quiet, which made for a peaceful night’s sleep, and my fellow travelers were friendly and respectful. The bathroom was spacious, spotless, and well-maintained—definitely one of the best I’ve seen in a hostel. Plus, the free breakfast was a real highlight: fresh, tasty, and with great variety. Location-wise, it’s unbeatable—just an 8-minute walk to the city center, making it super easy to explore shops, restaurants, and attractions on foot. Everything is so convenient and well thought out. I’ll definitely be back and would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Birmingham.

Prime Lodge

We stayed at Prime Lodge for just one night during the Commonwealth Games, mainly because of the location and price, which seemed like a good fit for our needs. Honestly, we didn’t expect much from the hotel, but the experience was worse than anticipated. The building looked like it had been closed for years—our taxi driver even double-checked that it was actually a place to stay. We had to call the front desk to open the door when we arrived. The room was extremely small, with a portable TV that barely picked up any signal. The bed was pushed right against the wall, making the space feel cramped, and the room was uncomfortably hot. On the bright side, the reception staff were friendly and helpful. Since it was only one night and the hotel was close to the train station back into Birmingham, we managed to get by. Still, I wouldn’t recommend staying here again if there’s another option available.

The Aston Tavern

Stayed at The Aston Tavern while attending a match at Villa Park, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish. The moment we arrived, Paul, Michelle, Tony, Stacy, and the whole family made us feel right at home—warm, welcoming, and incredibly helpful throughout our entire visit. We were greeted with complimentary tea and coffee, and the next morning enjoyed a delicious breakfast that started with cereal and then offered a wide range of fresh options from the menu, followed by more tea and coffee. The shower was excellent, and the room came with top-notch amenities, including a great selection of teas and coffee. Even after check-out, we were allowed to store our belongings securely, which was super convenient when we ran errands during the day. When we returned before the game, we were treated to free entry plus a hearty bowl of food—then again when we came back before leaving Birmingham. It’s rare to find such genuine hospitality where you truly feel looked after. Plus, the location is unbeatable: just a 2-minute walk to Villa Park, 7 minutes to the local Tesco, 30 minutes to Star City, and both train stations are within 5 and 10 minutes on foot. Everything was perfectly positioned for easy access. This wasn’t just a place to stay—it felt like coming home. I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

The Birmingham Hotel

I wish I’d read the reviews more carefully before booking. This stay at The Birmingham Hotel was truly disappointing. On the first night, I noticed soiled bed linens but didn’t mention it right away—by the next morning, I politely asked for a replacement. Unfortunately, nothing changed—only the bed was made up. I only checked again close to midnight and realized I’d been sleeping on dirty sheets once more. I brought it up again the following morning, and this time they finally replaced them. However, the bedroom door was left wide open, leaving all my belongings fully exposed to anyone passing by. It’s a fire door that should automatically close—this is a serious safety concern. I paid nearly £700 for two rooms over three nights, and honestly, even if I’d paid £150, I’d feel ripped off. For the price and experience, I can’t recommend staying here. Save yourself the hassle—book elsewhere.
