Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Sunlight Rock

Xiamen Gulangyu International Conference Center Hotel is ideal, located just a 5-minute walk from Ryukō-yan Rock. Its sea-view rooms and hillside terraces offer breathtaking vistas of the rock’s sheer cliffs and Xiamen Harbor. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow sunrise views of mist curling around the rock, creating a painterly scene.

Another top choice is Gulangyu Shangri-La, blending Peranakan architecture with lush natural surroundings. Each suite features private courtyards, immersing guests in the serene atmosphere of Ryukō-yan Rock. Both properties provide complimentary shuttles to Gulangyu ferry terminal and guided tours exploring the rock’s carved inscriptions and ancient trails, offering a perfect blend of culture and nature.

Take a 15-minute ferry from Xiamen Wanzhou Pier to Gulangyu Island, then walk 10 minutes along Zhongshan Road to reach Ryukō-yan Rock entrance. For drivers, park at the western parking lot on Gulangyu, then transfer to electric sightseeing buses (RMB 20 per ride) for access.

Use apps like Xiamen Metro or Didi Chuxing for pre-booked rides to avoid peak congestion. Note: Motor vehicles are prohibited on the island—travel by foot or electric shuttle only. Well-maintained circular walking paths make it ideal for families and seniors.

Multiple tourist service stations around the site offer maps, brochures, and emergency assistance. Some hotels even provide complimentary shuttles from the pier to the attraction, saving time and energy.

Participate in stone inscription rubbing workshops guided by artisans, where you’ll use rice paper and ink to replicate ancient calligraphy carved into the rock—experiencing centuries-old Chinese artistry firsthand.

Attend daily classical music performances at the Gulangyu Concert Hall, set against the backdrop of Ryukō-yan Rock’s natural scenery, creating a harmonious fusion of sound and landscape.

Join guided hikes along the Qing Dynasty stone trails, learning about the rock’s historical role as a coastal defense fort and marveling at sea-carved caves and natural rock formations. Multilingual guides (Chinese + English) available for international visitors.

Wrap up with a traditional tea session at a historic Gulangyu teahouse, sipping premium "Baihe Ming" oolong tea paired with handmade biscuits—perfect for savoring the island’s slow-paced charm.

Accommodation prices near Ryukō-yan Rock vary significantly by type and season. Boutique guesthouses in old Gulangyu streets range from CNY 800–1,500 per night, featuring private courtyards and breakfast. Mid-to-high-end hotels like Shangri-La or Shangri-La Resort cost CNY 1,800–3,500, including scenic rooms and premium services. Prices rise 30%-50% during peak seasons (Spring Festival, National Day).

For budget travelers, consider Gulangyu youth hostels or family-style apartments priced at CNY 300–600 per night—but book 1–2 months in advance. All options offer complimentary shuttles to the rock and many feature sea-view balconies or hillside terraces for morning and evening views.

Use platforms like Xiaohongshu or HopeGoo to check authentic reviews. Some hotels also offer attraction combo packages including entry tickets and guided tours, saving over CNY 100—ideal for savvy travelers.

Ryukō-yan Rock is open daily from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with last entry at 5:30 PM. Ticket price is CNY 15, with half-price for students upon presentation of valid ID. Purchasing the Gulangyu Island Pass (CNY 100) grants unlimited access to Ryukō-yan Rock and other major attractions—highly recommended for multi-site visits.

Visit before 9:00 AM to avoid crowds and catch the golden sunlight glinting off the rock’s cliffs. On-site multilingual audio guides (CNY 30/day) include historical narration and ambient sound effects, enhancing the experience.

Please note: climbing restricted areas is strictly prohibited—follow signage and staff instructions for safety. During peak season, reserve entry via the official Xiamen Tourism mini-program to minimize queue times.

Temporary trail closures may occur due to rain; check official announcements before departure for smooth travel.

Yuhai Linhai Seaview Villa Hotel

This stay was so memorable that I just had to leave a review even though the hotel didn’t ask for one—this deserves a huge thumbs up! The location is perfect: right on the main street, super easy to access without dragging luggage up steep hills. You’re close to everything—shops, restaurants, and attractions—but somehow still tucked away in a peaceful corner with a private seaside courtyard. Just sitting there sipping tea while watching the waves is pure bliss. The staff were incredibly attentive and thoughtful, especially the afternoon tea service which was beautifully presented and delicious. If I had to point out one tiny flaw, it’s the glass partition between the bathroom and bedroom—it feels a bit awkward in terms of privacy and design, but it’s not enough to ruin the experience. Overall, this place offers amazing value, comfort, and charm. I’d definitely come back.

Mercure Hotel (Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street Seaview)

Traveling with my mom to Xiamen, I specifically booked a sea-view room at this hotel and couldn’t be happier with the experience. The location is unbeatable—right next to the beach, and just a short walk to Zhongshan Road and Baishi Market for shopping and local food. I was a bit concerned about renovation noise on the upper floors, but the front desk confirmed it only happens on weekends, so no worries. The room assigned was exactly what we wanted, both in floor level and view. Breakfast was good, though could use a bit more variety. Special thanks to concierge Yang who greeted us warmly upon arrival, checked in on our comfort, and even brought fresh welcome fruit—a thoughtful touch. On departure day, we had a late afternoon flight, and I asked if we could extend checkout time. Front desk staff Xiao Huang saw we were traveling with an elder and kindly extended our check-out to 1:30 PM—so appreciative! This hotel offers great value, excellent service, and genuine care. I’ll definitely be back here on my next visit to Xiamen.

Best Western Plus Park Hotel Xiamen

We stayed here as a family, and we were thoroughly impressed! The hotel is perfectly located—just a short walk from the metro, quiet yet convenient, and surrounded by great local spots. Even though it's not brand new, the upkeep is excellent: clean rooms, well-maintained common areas, and a nice overall vibe that feels upscale for the price. We didn’t need to rely on rideshares—we could easily hail a cab right outside the door to get anywhere in town. The neighborhood is fantastic for food lovers: there’s a wide variety of eateries nearby. I especially recommend Wu Zai Tian Snack Shop—it’s a local favorite with authentic flavors. And yes, we finally got to try the famous balang (sea slug) jelly again, which was a nostalgic treat after years of missing it. If you're visiting Xiamen with kids or family, this hotel is a top pick!

Gulangyu Lijiayuan Seaview Villa Hotel (Sanqiutian Wharf)

Our kids specifically asked to stay here — and we’re so glad they did! The room was fantastic, and even though it’s been two years since our last visit, it still feels brand new with clean, well-maintained furnishings. The only minor downside is the empty pool in the courtyard — it looks a bit bare without water, but adding some plants could really bring it to life. Still, the swing was a big hit — my kids were swinging non-stop and laughing their heads off! The location is super convenient, just a short walk from Sanqiutian Wharf, and the overall vibe is peaceful and charming. For families looking for a relaxing, authentic getaway on Gulangyu Island, this place is absolutely worth a return visit.

Staying at Bayview Hotel on Gulangyu Island was an absolute highlight of our trip. The location is perfect—just steps away from Sanqiutian Wharf and within easy reach of all the main attractions. What stood out most was the front desk staff, who kindly offered detailed local route suggestions that saved us a ton of time figuring things out on our own. The breakfast was beautifully presented and surprisingly delicious for such a relaxing island stay. Room layout is smart and spacious, and considering the prime location on the island, the value for money is outstanding. There’s even a little dog in the lobby—can’t touch him, but he’s so well-behaved he actually opens the door for guests! It’s like he’s part of the family. I’d definitely recommend this place to friends and will be coming back myself.

Gulangyu Flower Sound Garden Beauty Villa

Tucked away in a quiet alley of Gulangyu, this hidden gem offers an experience that truly stands out. Despite its secluded location, getting here is surprisingly easy—no need to battle crowds or navigate confusing streets. The front desk staff reached out ahead of time via WeChat, sent a hand-drawn map with clear landmarks, and even shared helpful tips on booking the ferry tickets. Following the guide made our journey smooth and stress-free, with no steep stairs or uphill climbs—perfect for travelers with luggage. The property is a beautifully restored century-old villa, where lush greenery fills the courtyard, blending vintage charm with modern comfort. Swing in the old-fashioned rattan chairs, snap photos among the vines and blooms—the whole place feels like a living postcard. At night, it's incredibly peaceful, just the sound of waves and rustling leaves. Inside, the rooms are immaculate—spotless from top to bottom. The bedding feels soft and fresh, almost like it’s been kissed by sunlight. Attention to detail is outstanding: everything from the toiletries to the lighting is thoughtfully chosen. But the real highlight? The rooftop terrace. Watching the evening skyline light up with the twin towers glowing across the bay is unforgettable. Wake up to birdsong and a simple but delicious breakfast of congee with preserved fish—warm, comforting, and authentically local. The staff are attentive without being intrusive, making you feel like a guest in a friend’s home rather than a paying customer. This isn’t just a stay—it’s a moment worth remembering. I’ll definitely come back the next time I visit Gulangyu.

After checking out several options, I’m so glad I chose this place—it completely exceeded my expectations! The location is unbeatable: right next to Baishi Market, where you can grab delicious local snacks and fresh seafood, and it’s just a short walk or quick subway ride away from the ferry terminal to Gulangyu Island. The room was spacious enough for four people, with clean, well-maintained furnishings and zero unpleasant odors—definitely one of the most hygienic stays I’ve had. The owner was incredibly friendly and helpful, going out of their way to make us feel welcome. There’s even a cute little cat that lounges around the lobby—adorable and adds such a warm, homely vibe. Everything about this stay was perfect: comfort, convenience, and charm. I’ll definitely be back and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Xiamen!

C&D Hotel Xiamen

This was my second stay at this hotel, and the experience was just as excellent as the first time. During New Year's period, the hotel was lively with plenty of family-friendly activities that kept the kids entertained. The guest manager, Xiao Luo, went above and beyond—she reached out before check-in to confirm details and checked in regularly during our stay to ensure everything was satisfactory. On checkout day, she even arranged a late departure without hassle, which was incredibly thoughtful. The room itself was spotless and comfortable, with soft bedding that made for a restful night’s sleep. The housekeeping staff were thorough and attentive, leaving no corner untouched. Every team member we interacted with showed genuine warmth and professionalism. From start to finish, the service felt personal and caring. It’s a perfect choice for families or anyone looking for a welcoming, well-run hotel. I’ll definitely be back and highly recommend it to others.

HUALUXE Xiamen Haicang Harbour View by IHG

Check-in was a bit stressful at first, but the on-duty manager handled everything with great empathy and professionalism. After a calm conversation, the issue was resolved smoothly—and they even surprised me with afternoon tea, evening entertainment, and a bottle of wine. The next day’s airport transfer was excellent too; driver Andy was friendly, courteous, and helped carry my luggage without being asked. We had a pleasant chat throughout the ride. A few suggestions for improvement: the afternoon tea selection was limited, and the fruit—especially the watermelon—wasn’t very fresh. Dinner options were also quite narrow. The room stayed chilly despite running the heater all night—temperature barely reached 15°C, so adding a heating option would be helpful. Also, breakfast was missing some items, and they weren’t replenished promptly. That said, the overall experience was still positive. The staff responded quickly to feedback, and the views from the room were stunning—especially sunrise in the morning. One small disappointment: no capsule or instant coffee available, which is common even in budget hotels. Adding that would make the stay much more convenient for guests who rely on coffee.

This stay completely exceeded my expectations! The room was spacious and flooded with natural light—waking up to the morning sun felt incredibly peaceful and rejuvenating. Janice, the staff member who assisted with check-in, was warm, professional, and incredibly efficient—no long queues or delays. Dinner at the fourth-floor riverside restaurant was a highlight: the ambiance was serene and romantic, with breathtaking views of the city lights across the water. The cuisine was authentic Fujian-style, beautifully prepared and full of flavor—every dish stood out. Breakfast was equally impressive, offering a wide variety of options from local favorites to international choices. The entire property felt quiet and well-maintained, creating a perfect retreat for relaxation. Whether it’s for a weekend getaway with friends or a peaceful escape, this hotel delivers comfort, charm, and excellent value. I’ll definitely be back.
