Fast forward to today: I finally stayed here, walked the same stairs once trodden by General Marshall, stood at the window, and in the misty rain, for a moment, saw myself — still that broke student from years ago. The weather kept me indoors, so I missed the garden’s charm, but tradition holds: I headed straight across the street to my favorite dumpling shop for four ounces of steamed buns. My appetite hasn’t changed — nor has my waistline. But honestly? That’s okay. Room 5132 hasn’t been renovated in ages. Peeling paint on the window grilles, curtains fluttering in the humid breeze, and creaky wooden floors that groan underfoot — yes, it’s noisy, but that’s exactly why I chose this place. It’s not about luxury; it’s about atmosphere. When I checked the platform later and saw the listing go gray, I thought, “Wait… closed already?” Only after reading reviews did I realize it was just the long-awaited renovation — relief! I’m glad they’re taking their time. One day, I’d love to come back with my girlfriend, book a room with a balcony, enjoy tea among flowers, and once again let the old floorboards whisper stories from a century past. And if possible, maybe a little discount? Because between the last visit and now, one thing’s clear: my age and weight have increased, but my wallet? Still sounds like coins clinking. From the very first greeting, the service was exceptional—Esther from front desk went above and beyond: upgraded our room, offered a two-hour late check-out without hesitation, and even shared her WeChat for easy communication. That kind of personal touch is rare. Breakfast was an absolute highlight—huge variety, beautifully presented. From freshly steamed dim sum and handmade noodles to a wide selection of breads, oatmeal, fresh fruit, yogurt, and even ice cream, every detail was thoughtfully curated. But what truly stole the show was the garden. Lush green lawns, mature trees casting dappled sunlight, historic buildings nestled among foliage—perfect for quiet strolls or Instagram-worthy shots. Along the way, you’ll pass charming old shikumen homes, cozy cafes, boutique shops, and historic landmarks, making every stroll feel like a little adventure through Shanghai’s soul. The hotel’s lush garden on the south side is a peaceful retreat—perfect for unwinding in the middle of the bustling city. While some facilities show their age, everything is well-maintained and blends beautifully with Shanghai’s classic charm. Service is exceptional—attentive, thoughtful, and clearly influenced by Japanese hospitality standards. Even the hallway has that subtle, calming Japanese aesthetic. Breakfast is a highlight too, offering authentic Japanese touches like natto and miso soup, alongside a wide variety of other options.
