Everything you need to know about Dadou Road

Stay at Doudou Road Art Hotel, a boutique retreat nestled in Hangzhou’s historic district, blending traditional Jiangnan architecture with contemporary design. Each room features wood-carved windows, paved stone floors, and curated handcrafted tea sets, evoking the spirit of classical Chinese literati. Located just 5 minutes from the China Academy of Art Xiangshan Campus, it’s ideal for art lovers. The hotel also offers ancient book collections and local calligraphy workshops, allowing guests to immerse in Hangzhou’s cultural heritage while enjoying quiet mornings by the canal. Nearby access to Qinghefang Historic District and West Lake walking paths enhances its appeal for authentic exploration.

Doudou Road itself is a prime photography destination showcasing authentic Jiangnan water town scenery. Wandering through narrow cobblestone alleys lined with weathered white walls and black-tiled roofs, especially during golden hour or twilight, creates stunning reflections on the canal waters. Don’t miss the vibrant graffiti murals and modern sculptures at the Doudou Road Art District, which contrast beautifully with the old town aesthetic. Nearby, Xiaohe Direct Street Cultural Preservation Zone boasts well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty homes perfect for documentary-style shots. A wide-angle lens is recommended to capture the depth and delicate lighting within these historic lanes.

The most convenient route is taking Line 4 of Hangzhou Metro from Hangzhou East Railway Station to Gongchen Bridge East Station, then a 10-minute walk to Doudou Road. The journey takes about 25 minutes and costs only 8 RMB. For a more scenic option, take Bus 76 or 131, which stops directly at Doudou Road, offering views of green corridors and the Qiantang River. Alternatively, use ride-hailing apps like DiDi or Gaode Maps—about 15 minutes and 30–40 RMB. All options provide wheelchair accessibility, making them suitable for families and elderly travelers.

Weekends feature the Hangzhou Handmade Market, where artisans showcase intangible cultural heritage crafts like pottery, embroidery, and paper-cutting. Guests can join workshops in rice paper folding or Hanging Fan painting. The Doudou Road Art Gallery hosts rotating exhibitions of contemporary ink painting and multimedia art, often including guided tours and creative sessions. Annually, the Poetic River Event celebrates literature with live poetry readings paired with guqin music and tea ceremonies. These events typically run from afternoon to evening—check official WeChat accounts for reservations and schedules.

Doudou Road Family Stay is an excellent choice, located in the heart of the arts district. It offers connecting rooms, outdoor sand play areas, and child-safe amenities like cribs and non-slip mats. Family suites include interactive cooking kits for making traditional snacks like osmanthus rice cakes and lotus root paste. Nearby attractions include the Xiaohe Direct Street Children’s Museum and the Grand Canal Riverside Trail, perfect for safe, engaging walks. The property also supports wireless charging and smart voice control, ensuring comfort and convenience for all ages.

At night, Doudou Road transforms into a serene luminescent haven. Paper lanterns glow along the canal, casting soft ripples on the water’s surface, evoking a timeless atmosphere. Cozy cafés, bookshops, and tea houses extend hours until 10 PM, often hosting live guqin performances and spontaneous poetry readings. Visit Ting Shui Xuan, a hidden tea house inside a historic courtyard, where guests experience Song Dynasty tea rituals on tatami mats, listening to flowing water and distant temple bells. The quiet streets, occasional cat footsteps, and gentle whispers create a deeply intimate glimpse into Hangzhou’s slow living culture.

Shusheng Xunzhen No.2 Courtyard (Lingyin Temple Branch)

Staying here for two days was absolutely perfect. The location is unbeatable—just a short walk from the Cai Shen Temple cable car entrance, so no need to worry about parking near Lingyin Temple. The room was quiet, cozy, and spotlessly clean with lightweight yet warm bedding that made it feel like home. The hostess even turned on the AC before I arrived—such thoughtful touches really stood out. On day one, I followed a scenic route from Cai Shen Temple down through Chongguang Temple, Yongfu Temple, all the way to Lingyin Temple without backtracking. I managed to catch the evening chanting ceremony, counted the arhats, and felt truly blessed by the serenity of it all. Day two started with a trip to Fajixi Temple, which is a bit farther away. The host kindly drove me there and later picked me up—no hassle at all. On the return, I took a local electric shuttle or walked through the Three Zhen temples, each step filled with history and beauty: from the Kangxi inscription at Sanmo Temple to the old pavilion where Li Shutong once meditated. I stopped by Fajing Temple to pick up some traditional mooncakes—locals swear by them. Then wandered through Fajing Temple’s sacred grounds and stood by the famous Sanyi Stone, pondering what “non-dual path” truly means. Back at Lingyin Temple’s Feilai Entrance, the highlight of the journey was eating at Pumeng Vegetarian Restaurant. It required a short wait, but every bite was worth it—fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. Afterward, a quick 2-minute walk brought me back to the inn, where I relaxed with a cup of Jiuxiao Hongmei tea, played with the adorable cat in the courtyard, and admired the view of the first Cai Shen Temple. Two days flew by in peace and joy—this stay wasn’t just comfortable, it was deeply meaningful. I’ll definitely be back.

The owner and staff are incredibly warm and welcoming, going out of their way to make sure every need is met. The room itself is quiet and cozy, with a lovely view of the surrounding greenery right outside the window. It’s just a 5-6 minute walk to Feilai Peak, making it super convenient for exploring nearby attractions. What really stands out is the homemade cooking by the chef—simple, flavorful, and full of heart. And don’t even get me started on the three adorable cats that roam the property—they’re like part of the family! With its serene atmosphere, genuine hospitality, and charming little details, this inn offers an unforgettable stay. If you're looking for a quiet retreat in Hangzhou, this is absolutely worth a visit.

Hangzhou Shusheng Longjing Hotel

I always visit Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou around the end of the year, and I’ve been staying at Shusheng Longjing Hotel for years—it’s become my go-to choice. The location is perfect: just a 10-minute bike ride to West Lake and only 8–10 minutes to Lingyin Temple, making it super convenient for exploring the area on two wheels. The surrounding trails and quiet streets make cycling or walking the best way to get around. The staff went above and beyond—before check-in, they reached out to help with transport tips and followed up afterward to see how we were enjoying our stay. Having a 24/7 concierge was a huge plus. And the breakfast? Fantastic. Since the hotel runs its own Chinese restaurant, the food is fresh, flavorful, and authentic. It’s not just a place to sleep—it feels like a home base for a peaceful, well-organized trip. Highly recommend for anyone looking for comfort, convenience, and genuine hospitality.

Wyndham Grand Plaza Royale Hangzhou

I was a bit nervous before my trip after reading so many reviews, and originally planned to book two rooms—luckily, I only ended up securing one. Still, I decided to give it a try and called the reservations team. I was connected with Miss Shao Linyang, who was incredibly helpful. Even though we couldn’t secure an additional room, she followed up promptly and made sure every step was communicated clearly. To my surprise, she upgraded my room and even left fresh fruit upon arrival. When I mentioned I’d be traveling with a child, she proactively arranged kid-friendly amenities, and the room came equipped with a mini-bar—thoughtful touches that really stood out. As a long-standing five-star property, the service level is consistently excellent. The location is unbeatable—right next to Wulin Night Market, and just a 10-minute walk to West Lake. On days when traffic restrictions made taxis hard to find, walking became the easiest option. Breakfast was generous in both variety and quality. Overall, this stay exceeded my expectations. A special thank you to Miss Shao for her professionalism and warm hospitality—it truly made all the difference.
